Reduce Damage to Appliances by Preparing Them Properly Before Moving Day

Moving Your Fridge and Freezer

Moving a fridge incorrectly could cause irreparable damage to the compressor, condenser, and other working parts. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to help protect it on moving day.

At least 24 hours before the move, unplug the fridge from the power source and empty it completely. If your freezer compartment doesn’t auto-defrost you’ll need to allow plenty of time for any ice to thaw. Remove any shelves, trays or tubs and wash them in warm water with a mild detergent. Dry them thoroughly and pack them securely into a separate carton for moving.

Wash down the interior walls and fixed shelving inside the fridge and freezer. Dry them with a soft cloth and leave the door open. If your fridge is plumbed for water or ice-making purposes, you will need to arrange to have someone come and disconnect the machine before moving day. You may also need to get that person to reconnect your fridge to the plumbing at your new destination.

If you have a chest freezer, you will also need to prepare it thoroughly before it can be moved. Did you know that some removalist companies won’t shift a freezer that hasn’t been properly cleaned and emptied?

Remove any food and allow any ice within the freezer to thaw completely. Wash the inside walls with lukewarm soapy water and dry it thoroughly. Leave the lid open to allow any excess moisture to evaporate.

Moving Your Washing Machine and Dryer

If you’re like most people, your washing machine remains connected to the taps with hoses while you’re still living in your home. If you pack your washing machine into the truck with water still leaking from it, you risk damaging other items. There’s also the potential of damaging the machine if you’re not careful.

You will need to start preparing your washing machine a day or two before moving day. Unplug the washer from the power, turn off the taps and disconnect the hoses. Make sure each hose is properly drained of any water.

Clean the inside tub with a soft, dry cloth and make sure the lint filter is empty. Wrap the drained hoses in towels and place them into a separate box. Most washing machines have an agitator tub inside the unit that can be damaged if it wobbles around too much during the move. You can purchase plastic or foam braces to place inside the machine to prevent the tub from moving around during the move.

Make sure you leave the lid or door open after you have cleaned the machine. Any remaining moisture inside the washer will evaporate. Your removalist will put the lid back down when it’s ready to be hoisted into the truck.

Unplug your dryer from the power source and clean the lint screen. Clean the inside of the dryer unit thoroughly with a dry paper towel. Don’t leave the power cord dangling. Tape it to the back of the machine for safety.

Moving Your TV, Computer and Stereo Equipment

TVs, stereos and computers can be easily damaged during a move unless you’re careful to prepare them before they’re packed into the truck. Before you unplug any of the cables or cords from your machines, take a photo or write some notes about which cables go where, and what should connect to other components at your new destination.

Pack any remote controls into clearly labelled boxes. Unplug the electronic appliance from the power source and remove any cables that can be taken off. Roll them into neat bundles and tie them with twine or clear tape. Be sure to always label each cord, as it can be tricky to know which appliance it belongs to at the other end. Pack the cables and cords into a box.

If you’re packing a printer, remove the ink cartridges and pack them in a sealed plastic bag to prevent leakage. If you’re packing speakers from your stereo, computer or home theatre system, ensure they’re packed upright so you don’t damage any of the internal components during the move.

Moving day can be stressful enough, but the last thing anyone wants is to spend money replacing an expensive household appliance that got damaged during the move. Take the time to prepare your major appliances properly. You’ll reduce the risk of damage, which could end up saving you money in the long run.
