Moving Made Easy

Four Things Before You Move

1. Change Your Address

This might seem like a no-brainer, but it always surprises people how many contacts they need to notify of their change of address. In addition to letting your friends and family know, make sure you contact any company that sends you a bill, even if the bill is online. This includes your mobile phone provider, credit card company and insurance agency. Also, be sure to change the address on magazine subscriptions or any other monthly deliveries you receive. In addition, you’ll want to remember to change your address anywhere it’s printed, from return-address labels to luggage tags.

2. Manage Your Accounts

First and foremost, you will need to make sure your current bank is still the most convenient option to your new house. You will need to close your accounts with the utility companies as well as open new accounts at your updated address. Don’t forget to schedule an appointment to have Internet and phone service installed shortly after moving, and don’t forget to cancel it at your old place…cable and Internet are expensive enough without paying twice!

You should also speak with a payroll specialist at your job to make sure they know you are moving house and have up-to-date records. This is especially important come tax season!

3. Health

Now we’re getting into those little nitty-gritty details that everyone overlooks. Before moving, remember to cancel your gym membership. Most gyms require notification a month in advance, so put this at the top of your to-do list.

If you take any medications, ensure you have enough to get you through several months. You will most likely need time to find a new doctor or transfer your prescription over to the local chemist.

Of course, it’s also a good idea to locate the nearest hospital to your new house, as well. The stress of a move can cause you to get run down and sick quite easily, and with everything on this to-do list you don’t have time to be ill!

4. Locate…

Almost as important as knowing where the closest doctor is to your new home is locating a coffee shop with free WiFi. It could take days or even weeks to get your Internet up and running. Also, take note of where there is a hardware store, as you will be making several trips there as you settle into your new place.
